Segments

A segment is a saved set of conditions evaluated against all contacts. Membership is not a fixed list of people: a contact joins or leaves as its field values change, so a segment written once stays current as the store grows and contact data is corrected.

Segments are listed on the Contacts page beneath the pinned All Contacts row, with a Type of Segment, the segment name, a contact count and the date it was created. Create Segment starts a new one.

Campaign Manager, Admin and Org Admin create and maintain segments, and the segment page described below is part of Contacts, so it opens for those roles only. A Campaigner can select an existing segment as a campaign audience but cannot build or change one, so ask a Campaign Manager or an administrator for a segment that does not exist yet.

Refreshing is the exception. A Campaigner can trigger a refresh from the audience summary on a campaign or a run, even though the segment page itself is closed to them. See Who can refresh.

The Segment Page

Opening a segment from the Contacts page shows:

  • the segment name, with Segment from All Contacts beneath it, naming the set the conditions are evaluated against
  • a Contacts count of how many contacts currently match
  • Next Refresh and Last refreshed, which describe when the count was last worked out and roughly when it will be worked out again
  • a Refresh button, which recalculates on demand, within the limits on how often that can be done
  • a searchable table of the contacts that match

The count and the two timestamps behave as described in Refreshing a Segment, which is worth reading before treating the number on screen as the exact size of a send.
