Adding a Contact Manually

Select Add Contacts on the Contacts page, then Add Manually, to create one contact from a form. For anything more than a handful of people, upload a file instead.

Completing the Form

The form captures reserved field values, grouped the same way as the contact record itself. Custom field values are not part of it, and helper text on the form says so: add those on the contact once it exists.

Fill in at least one identifier. Which identifiers a contact can hold, and why they cannot be changed afterwards, is covered in Identifiers. Everything else is optional, and blank fields can be filled in later.

What Happens on Save

The identifiers entered on the form are checked against the contacts already in the store, and one of three things follows.

  • The contact is created. At least one identifier entered is valid and not already in use.
  • The save is blocked because the contact already exists. Every identifier entered belongs to the same existing contact, so there is nothing new to create. Open that contact and edit it instead.
  • The save is blocked because the identifiers conflict. The identifiers entered belong to two different contacts. A single record cannot hold identifiers that already address two people, so correct the form and try again.

Once the contact is saved it appears on the All Contacts page straight away. Segment membership takes longer. A contact created between recalculations is not part of a segment's membership until that segment is next recalculated or someone refreshes it, so a new contact will not turn up in a segment immediately. See Refreshing a Segment for how often that happens and who can trigger one.

A campaign run against a segment recalculates it before working out its recipients, so a send does not depend on the count on screen. See Before a run sends.
